Attacks on the rule of law have become routine along with relentless campaigning against human rights watchdogs. The rise of the populist Right in Australia is undermining social cohesion and values of tolerance and diversity and shows no sign of abating.’

Join Greg Barns, Barrister, writer and Lecturer of RMIT University's Juris Doctor Program, in a discussion about his book, Rise of the Right, where Greg argues that: ‘Former Prime Minister Paul Keating once said that when you change Prime Minister, you change the nation'.

This is certainly true in the context of the rise of right-wing populism and the election of Mr Keating's successor John Howard in 1996. John Howard adroitly harnessed nativism, xenophobia, racism and a view of Australian society in which there were 'elites' and 'battlers'. Elements of the media, particularly organisations like News Limited and tabloid radio, championed this view of Australia. Today Australia is much less committed to liberal democratic values than was the case prior to Mr Howard's election.
