Our Exceptional Friend: Australia’s Fatal Alliance with the United States

2021 marks the seventieth anniversary of the Australia, New Zealand and United States Security Treaty (ANZUS Treaty), symbolising the long-standing Australia-US security alliance.

In ‘Our Exceptional Friend’, Dr Emma Shortis questions Australia’s relationship with the United States, highlighting the need to look beyond the US and to diversify to find new strategic partners. Challenging the perception that Australia has a binary choice between the US and China, Shortis combines history, current affairs and ideals of morality to develop a justification to overhaul Australia’s seemingly most important political relationship.

This attempt to look beyond the seeming binary choice between the US and China has been a focus of many recent works, highlighting its importance on Australia’s short- and medium-term future. Shortis’ addition is adept and thoughtful, and poses questions on whether Australia should limit itself to the status quo in its association with the US?

Dr Emma Shortis is a nationally recognised expert in the history and politics of the United States, and a research fellow at RMIT University. Emma also co-hosts RMIT's popular history podcast, Barely Gettin' By. She writes regularly for mainstream media including ABC News Online and the Sydney Morning Herald. Before joining RMIT, Emma spent a year in the United States as the Fox-Zucker International Fellow at Yale University, where she finished writing her PhD in History. In 2020, she was named RMIT's Media Commentator of the year.Due to Victoria's lockdown this event will now be online only.
