Enduringly fascinating enigmas of the bird world, owls have long drawn the attention of humans as we try to understand them—varied species with distinctly expressive faces and striking, elusive, powerful characters. Observing owls in the care of local rescue organizations, San Francisco Bay Area resident Jeannine Chappell begins her collage-like works on paper, later digitally enhancing them. Her work conveys the unique character of each species, bringing us closer to these intensely wild birds.
