By the time of the 1900 world’s fair, the Paris Exposition Universelle, the highly commercial decorative style known as Art Nouveau had achieved unprecedented popularity. Late nineteenth-century printing innovations made the poster a fresh, exciting medium and a prime advertising tool. Artists suddenly reached a wider audience as their works were used to announce events; lure passersby into cafés, cabarets, and shops; and to purchase everything from cocoa to cigarettes, beer to bicycles, fashion to furniture. Among the artists featured in this calendar are Georges de Feure, Josef Maria Auchentaller, and Privat Livemont.
