Author Submissions

Hardie Grant Books publishes a wide variety of Australian titles on subjects including food and wine, popular and literary non-fiction, memoir and auto/biography, politics, parenting, business, business and finance, new age, and literary and popular fiction. We are currently accepting unsolicited manuscripts in these categories. We do not publish poetry, educational, academic or children’s books. If you have a children’s book submission, please see the Hardie Grant Egmont website.

Due to the sheer number of submissions we receive, we cannot acknowledge receipt of each manuscript. We do, however, read each submission and consider it carefully. It may take some time before your proposal is read and an opinion formulated – in most cases, you should hear from us within twelve to sixteen weeks. In busier times, it may take longer.

Please send a covering letter, short synopsis, author CV and the first three chapters of your manuscript (or at least 50 pages). We require all submissions to be typed and double-spaced, on A4 paper. Please avoid elaborate binding and staples, and ensure that all pages are numbered. Submissions on email or disk will not be considered. Please retain a copy of your manuscript, and do not send original illustrations or photographs.

For non-fiction submissions, please also:

  • list similar books that are already in print and explain how your proposal differs from these;
  • list additional markets that your book could sell to, besides bookshops; and
  • explain how you would promote your book and whether or not you have media or corporate contacts who would help us to publicise and market your book.

If you wish your manuscript to be returned, please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Although all possible care is taken with submissions, Hardie Grant Books bears no responsibility for the loss or damage of unsolicited materials received.

Please address submissions to:

Further information:

There are a number of organisations that help writers improve their skills and achieve publication. The Australian Society of Authors has a very informative website at www.asauthors.org, and is a good place to start.

The Australian Publishers Association (ph: 02 9281 9788) has a publication for sale, Directory of Members, which may help you ascertain which publishers would be most interested in your work. Each state and territory also has a writers centre and a variety of writers groups. These groups are a great resource for information, support and encouragement.
