What was your favourite book as a child?
My favourite picture book was John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat – the story of an old English sheepdog who becomes jealous when the old lady he lives with befriends a stray cat. I think I identified with John Brown. I also liked books that scared me a little bit. Where the Wild Things Are and, when I was older, Roald Dahl’s The Witches. Then when I was eleven or twelve, I became completely obsessed with My Sister Sif by Ruth Park. OK, I know that’s more than one book. Sorry.
If you could be a fictional character, who would you be?
I think I’d be Lyra Belacqua. I’d love to have a daemon.
